My machine is finally dressed!

At last - my sewing machine is prettily dressed - and protected from dust!

And it's all thanks to Jenny of elefantz and the challenge she set for us sewers to create a machine cover, with a deadline of 31 August. Talk about cutting it fine, but if I didn't do it now, I don't know when I would have got around to it. Thanks Jenny! :-)

Once I'd finished the cover itself, I thought it looked a bit plain. So I set to work on designing a simple tree applique, adhered it to the cover with vilisofix, and machine-stitched all the way around the edges to hold it in place.

Here is the 'before' photo:

I measured my machine and made the cover based on a pattern I found at Spool. The fabric is a loose-weave canvas that I found in the curtain-material section of my local craft store. It has a nice linen look, but is much cheaper than the other beautiful linens that are on the market (and difficult to find!)

My 'craft space' is rather "busy". Would you like to see it? It hasn't been tidied yet!

And to the right:

The desk itself is a big old office desk that I purchased a few years ago from the Salvos. The original top is dark brown in colour, so I covered it with this bright vinyl tablecloth material that I bought at the craft store. I have to be careful not to match my fabrics directly on the desk - as you might guess - the blue and pinks can really affect your colour choices if your eye wanders on to the desktop! But I like it, it is much more cheerful than brown!

The craft room of my dreams would be simple, functional and peaceful. I love Laurraine's space (from Patchwork Pottery), she has been interviewed recently for an article and you can read all about it here, and see pics of her workspace. Laurraine is such a talented lady!

I think 'the dream studio' will stay in my dreams for a while yet! So what does your working space look like? I'd love to see!

Until next time - happy creating!

You clever, creative girl!! I love the fabrics you chose and the applique is so sweet, just perfect. :-)
Your desk is lovely with that vinyl - I have never thought of that, but it would certainly lift the tone of my own desk! May I borrow the idea please??

Your cover looks great - the applique really sets it off. It suits your craft area so well. It looks like you have a lot of fun in your craft space.

Pretty dress for you machine. Now she'll be dust free and warm! I think we all suffer from messy sewing space. I can't wait until next year when we tear up the carpet and put down new floors and I can move into the finished basement!

Wonderful machine cover, Vikki. I love the colors. Mine just sits naked on my sewing table, poor thing.

Your craft space looks very condusive to creating and is quite reflective of your personality I think...bright, cheery and imaginative.

Lovely machine cover. Must admit i thought Jenny's was a good idea, but have been snowed under with assessments.
Your craft area is a somewhat tidier than mine (gross understatement) LOL. In fact mine's unusable in its present condition.
Well at craft class I was sorting out my wish quilt (I had to undo all the filler strips and redo a stitchery panel) and cut a heap of charm squares in half for a quilt from the moda bake shop. Not to mention shop-browsing, chatting and coffee. I also sorted out my fabrics for a free BOM a lady we both know is doing on her blog :).
We were very fortunate Tuesday night and didn't lose power at all. Don't think I would have left Kris & Liam in the dark :)
Hope your children enjoyed their birthdays.
Love and hugs,
Sharon

BTW I want to hear all about your class this week...I am soooo envious, even though I know it was totally impractical at the moment. So I want to live vicariously through your experience,

Hi Vikki,
Oh, well done on your sewing machine cover, so pretty.
I should have joined in on this one, my gal could use one but I've still got L plates on when it comes to sewing.

Your space looks very creative, not messy.
Hugs,
Anna

Hey Vikki! Your machine cover looks great - and I see your a "Husky" gal too! :0) Hmmm ... your creative space is WAY more organised and neat than mine - looks like the cupboards all threw up in mine at the moment - SIGH! Still stuff in there from the kitchen renno. One day I hope to reclaim my space. Yep, I think we all have mental plans for our 'dream' craft studio - lots of space, lots of organised storage, lots of light ... and cleaning faeries to come and tidy it regularly! :0) Happy creating - Bear Hugs! KRIS
